BROUK President Tun Khin warned the UN Human Rights Council that a disturbing pattern of sexual and gender-based violence has emerged against Rohingya women and girls in Rakhine State, alongside forced recruitment and other escalating abuses against Rohingya communities.
On February 27, BROUK President Tun Khin addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council during the interactive dialogue on the High Commissioner’s oral update on the situation of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar.
In his intervention, Tun Khin warned that a disturbing pattern of sexual and gender-based violence has emerged against Rohingya women and girls in Rakhine State. Women detained by the Arakan Army in villages including Ywar Nyo Taung and Ngar Sar Kyu have reportedly been raped, physically abused and extorted for ransom.
Tun Khin also highlighted escalating abuses against Rohingya communities, including systematic forced recruitment by both the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army. Rohingya men and women are reportedly being arrested from villages and urban areas and taken to training camps against their will, forcing many young people to hide or attempt to flee abroad.
“A disturbing pattern of sexual and gender-based violence has emerged alongside forced recruitment. Women detained by the Arakan Army have reportedly been raped, physically abused and extorted for ransom,” Tun Khin told the Human Rights Council.
Tun Khin warned that fear of retaliation prevents many victims from speaking out, reinforcing a climate of impunity. He also highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation facing Rohingya communities, including food shortages during Ramadan, restrictions on movement, lack of livelihoods and damage to mosques without electricity or repair.
Tun Khin urged the international community to hold all perpetrators accountable, including both the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, including through targeted sanctions against their leadership.
