Joint Statement: 9 Years On: Accountability Needed for Myanmar Military Junta’s Atrocities Against the Rohingya

On the ninth anniversary of the 2017 Rohingya genocide, BROUK has joined 69 other Rohingya, Burmese and international human rights organisations in calling for urgent action to secure justice and accountability for atrocities against the Rohingya.

The joint statement highlights continuing abuses against Rohingya by the Burmese military and Arakan Army, the worsening humanitarian situation for Rohingya refugees and the urgent need to end decades of impunity.

The organisations call for stronger international action on accountability, targeted sanctions, a global arms embargo and increased humanitarian support and protection for Rohingya refugees.

EU Must Expand Burma/Myanmar Oil and Gas Sector Sanctions

On the eve of European Foreign Ministers’ expected annual rollover of European Union targeted sanctions on the Burmese military, we the undersigned European civil society organisations call on the European Union to expand sanctions targeting oil and gas revenue reaching the Burmese military.

The European Union (EU) must extend its sanctions framework on Burma to cover the entire oil and gas extraction supply chain, including service companies, financial intermediaries, insurers, accreditation providers and engineering contractors.

Newcastle Unveils World’s First Permanent Rohingya Memorial

Newcastle upon Tyne, UK – History was made today as Newcastle upon Tyne became the first city in the UK and the world to unveil a permanent memorial dedicated to the victims of the Rohingya genocide.

The landmark memorial, located in Newcastle City Council’s Peace Garden, was officially unveiled following a civic ceremony at the Council Chamber and a procession led by the Lord Mayor. The initiative, led by Independent Newcastle Councillor and human rights advocate Cllr Habib Rahman, represents a powerful commitment to remembrance, justice, and global awareness.

In observation of the UN General Assembly “High-Level Conference on the Situation of the Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar”

Today, on this historic occasion, we, the Rohingya people, stand before the world with one voice.

For decades, we have endured genocide, apartheid, and life in exile. Our homeland, Arakan, has been burned, looted, and emptied of its people. Our mothers and daughters have borne unspeakable violations. Our youth have grown up in refugee camps without any hope or future.

Yet, despite every attempt to destroy us, we remain unbroken.

Open letter: UN General Assembly must denounce Myanmar military junta’s sham election, support Myanmar people’s democratic aspirations 

We—206 Myanmar, regional, and international civil society organizations—call on the Member States of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to adopt a resolution that categorically rejects the Myanmar military junta’s sham election and explicitly supports the Myanmar people’s ongoing efforts to establish bottom-up federal democracy.

8 Years On: Accountability Needed for Myanmar Atrocities Against Rohingya 

August 25, 2025, marks eight years since the Myanmar military and authorities launched widespread atrocities against the Rohingya population in Myanmar’s  Rakhine State. 

Starting in August 2017, Myanmar security forces razed several hundred Rohingya villages and killed Rohingya women, men, and children throughout northern Rakhine State, forcing at least 700,000 to flee to Bangladesh. An Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar documented evidence of genocide and crimes against humanity.
